When the new gear is put into use without running-in, this phenomenon often occurs in a certain part, and the gear is bruised.

In the actual meshing process, the gear has both relative rolling and relative sliding, and the friction force of relative sliding is opposite on both sides of the node, resulting in pulsating load. The effect of load and pulse power makes the shear stress of fluctuating cyclic change in the depth of the gear surface layer, when the shear stress exceeds the fatigue limit of the gear material, the contact surface will produce fatigue cracks, and with the expansion of the cracks, the tooth surface will eventually spalling small pieces of metal, forming small pits on the tooth surface, which is called pitting. When the "pitting" expands into pieces, the metal pieces on the tooth surface peel off. In addition, uneven material or local abrasion, it is also easy to first appear contact fatigue on a tooth, resulting in spalling.

The gear teeth that bear the load during operation, like the cantilever beam, are greatly affected by the bending stress of the pulse cycle at the root.
